Week 4: The Right to Dance with Somebody

This is kind of a Frankenstein edit: it uses chunks of a big Italo anthem, a kind of slept-on soulful American disco tune, a funky (but super-corny) space disco song, and drums from several other records. They ended up combining into a happy, bouncy, hi-NRG-meets-filter-house kind of thing.

Week 3: In The Evening

This is a really beautiful song about how great/awful New York City is. It speaks to me a lot right now, as I am currently planning a move from New York (which is really, truly great/awful) to Chicago (hands down my favorite place on earth).

It’s weird to think that all the parts of Brooklyn where I spend my time were pretty much no-man’s-land when she sang this, and that she would’ve been partying in a Manhattan that I’ll never get to experience. Oh, to have been of partying age in the 1980s…

Week 2: Change of Mind

This is one of my all-time fave disco tunes, which itself is a cover of one of the very first disco songs. I first heard it in a Farley Jackmaster Funk mix from WGCI (way way WAY after the mix initially aired, obviously). It’s an AMAZING tune, but the lyrics have not aged well, the structure is kind of a mess, and the tempo is all-over-the-place (live drummers amirite???) So I tidied it up a bit.

The first post

Hi everybody, I’m Chrissy, a DJ, producer, record label owner, and dance music nerd.

Like many working DJs, I’ve made a lot of custom edits of songs to play out—taking a song I love and tweaking it for a dancefloor, or taking an almost-great song with some flaws and rearranging it to be just the bits I like. I’ve released a couple of these re-edits on vinyl, but for the most part I’ve kept them to myself.

In 2009, I started a blog called “My Year of Mixtapes“, where I made a mixtape a week, every week, for a year. Five years later, I’ve decided to follow up with this blog, where I’ll be giving away a new disco edit every Wednesday for a year. Or maybe longer.  emoji

The first free edit will go live September 3. See you then!
